parrot tracking final

Filed under: Animals,My Favorites,Telling Stories with Data/Sensors/Humans — Tags: , — *aly* @ 10:01 pm

For my final in Telling Stories with Humans, Sensors, and Data we were tasked with creating a project proposal including proposed data tracking device, made-up data and infographics (so, yes, we were supposed to actually make something, track it, then create an infographic, except that there was no more time left in the semester–scheduling not being nick’s particular strong suit). So, since this was a bit of a let-down, my co-conspirator (Emily) and I decided to do something fabulous and creative anyway.

The (parrot) Maze of Doom

This assignment was to create a performance art piece in public. I opted for an easy out and roped Paul and Chloe into helping. So, two people with birds on leashes and sidewalk chalk… yes, that simply *must* be performance art by default.

We were supposed to come up with a list of rules to constrain and direct our pieces… and somehow, mine turned into a list of ingredients instead. Of course, you’ll have to watch the video to find out what they are.

the abc’s of parrot-walking (in Greenpoint)

The second assignment for the NYC Lab of Modern Life class was to create an audio tour of a part of the city inspired by the Janet Cardiff piece Her Long Black Hair. The audio is meant to overlay the real audio of the city while the listener walks the neighborhood in question.

For my project I picked Greenpoint, the neighborhood I live in, and draw a parallel between families and their kids, people and their dogs, and me and Riley. I wrote a children’s ABC style poem about the things that Riley and I saw while on our walk.

Here is the audio.

Or maybe here will download better.

Playing with Jitter

My first Jitter patch turned my laptop into a virtual Riley. I took a video of Riley running around his cage talking to himself (of course I edited the audio a bit to take out the gaps so he would have uninterrupted chatter). Then the patch plays the video with no audio until it gets input from the microphone, then it plays audio… the effect? Riley starts talking if you talk. Just like real life.

For the first assignment in my Video for New Media class, Riley and I took a walk to McCarren park today.

the animal final (here kitty)

riley hatFor my final project, I started with the idea of doing a photoshoot of myself in Victorian garb wearing my parrot, Riley, as a hat or as part of a hat. I planned on using a couple of these photos as illustrations for a story I would write. So, I made a hat with his molted flight and tail feathers, lots of ribbon, flowers, and fake butterflies. During the shoot, my cat wandered by and joined in– becoming a cat-stole. (more…)

Riley is awesome. Therefore he is the perfect subject for a flash animation. Of course, it helps that I made this drawing for another class. Hurray for multitasking.

jack-o-lantern (servo lab cont’d)

Filed under: Intro to Phys Comp — Tags: , — *aly* @ 8:49 pm

finished pumpkinSo, I decided on my creative endeavor for the servo lab. I am making a jack-o-lantern in September. But it will be October in another day or two, so really it’s not too unseasonal. And yes, I am the sort of person that has spooooky stuff in my house year round. (more…)
