parrot tracking final

For my final in Telling Stories with Humans, Sensors, and Data we were tasked with creating a project proposal including proposed data tracking device, made-up data and infographics (so, yes, we were supposed to actually make something, track it, then create an infographic, except that there was no more time left in the semester–scheduling not being nick’s particular strong suit). So, since this was a bit of a let-down, my co-conspirator (Emily) and I decided to do something fabulous and creative anyway.

riley hatFor my final project, I started with the idea of doing a photoshoot of myself in Victorian garb wearing my parrot, Riley, as a hat or as part of a hat. I planned on using a couple of these photos as illustrations for a story I would write. So, I made a hat with his molted flight and tail feathers, lots of ribbon, flowers, and fake butterflies. During the shoot, my cat wandered by and joined in– becoming a cat-stole. (more…)

animal object/ animal subject

Lu and giant kittyFor this assignment, I did some research about the Lindesfarne gospel and created a character I dubbed the Lindesfarne cat. I used the cat on one of the gospel’s pages as the basis for my object-cat. It seemed to me that there is nothing quite like an art historical view of something to make it seem very object-like, so I wrote a short paper about this particular cat and why it might be found in that particular document. I also did some drawings for the character study (in the style of the illuminated manuscript’s zoomorphic characters). Both drawings and essay may be found here. My final piece was a larger drawing in the style of the illustrations of Bede’s Life of Saint Cuthbert that showed scenes from (my version) of the Saint’s life.

Spirit Animal Documentation

Filed under: Animals — *aly* @ 10:36 pm

The Spirit animal assignment happened in three parts. The first part of the assignment was to create a representation of me with my spirit animal. I chose my Amazon parrot, Riley, and drew a picture of the two of us. I drew the image by hand then scanned it and colored it in Illustrator. Click here for the PDF.
